Into The Woods Costume Research

Into the Woods is a 2014 American musical fantasy film directed by Rob Marshall, and adapted to the screen by James Lapine from his and Stephen Sondheim's Broadway musical. A Walt Disney Pictures production, it features well know cast members including Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine and Johnny Depp. Inspired by the Grimm Brothers' fairy tales of "Little Red Riding Hood", "Cinderella", "Jack and the Beanstalk", and "Rapunzel", the film is a fantasy genre centred on a childless couple, who set out to end a curse placed on them by a vengeful witch. Ultimately, the characters are forced to rectify the consequences of their actions.

Colleen Atwood was the costume designer for the film, she based each character off a different era, and the fox’s costume that Jonny Depp wears is based of the 1930s illustrations. The baker’s wife’s costume was made to look hand made yet sophisticated in a sense. Using the wood as a concept she wanted each costume to have a bit of a wood feeling in their work. She worked very closely with each actor and actress to make sure they felt comfortable and that they thought it suited the character.

Peter King designed the hair and the look of each character he also worked very closely with the actors and actress' to make sure they felt comfortable at all time. He wanted the hair to look modern but also still looers he wanted their hair to look crazy and over the top, to link to their over the top and weird personality. Roy Helland, Meryl Streep's make-up and hair designer, worked very closely to what Meryl thought the witch should look like a blue enchantress of some sort.k like they were in a fairytale environment, he didn’t want to alienate the audience, where as for the Step mother and step sister
Colleen Atwood's favourite piece was Meryl's Second outfit 'because of the textile art that was involved'.
