Coloured Cinderella 1830s-1870s gowns

Image
Third Gown First Gown Second Gown Trialed Third Gown  After I drew out the dresses that i based off 1830s-1870s fashion I wanted to trial colours, I did this digitally as the paper was too thin and would of ruined the image itself. I used Photoshop to outline and colour in. On my third gown I wanted to trial it in blue and pink, this is so I could link the colours to the original two gowns in Disney's Cinderella. In the book the first book is described as silver and gold, so I tried my hardest to get the perfect gold and silver colour. My favourite dress is my third gown, because the gown is a similar shape to the Disney blue ball gown. I also like how its more realistic to the era it was set in. If I could change anything I would trial each design in the colours: Gold and Silver Pink Blue This would of given me a fair view of which order the dresses should be in based on colour and detail, this is because each time she goes to the festival her dress gets...

Cinderella Gown Designs

Image
After making mind maps of each of the princess' based on the book s description of them I wanted to design their clothes. I started with Cinderella as I found two descriptions about 2 pieces of items she wears. "Grey bed gown and wooden shoes" "The birds threw down a silver and gold dress" I wanted to draw two differnet styles; one based on the Disney outfits and the other based on the era Cinderella was based in. I found out that Cinderella was based in the 1830s- 1870s so I looked up different gowns in that era and based my designs off that. My favourite designs are definately the 1830s-1870s dresses, this is because it links in more to the horrible story as lots of the dresses they wore in that era were uncomfotable and hard to breath in. Although all the gowns will be 1830s-1870s style I will be using the orignal Disney working clothes as it will help link the story to Disney more. If I could change anything I would trial a few more 1830-1870...

London Art Trip

Image
As a trip our College went and visited London to look around the museums. I went and visited the Tate Modern, I saw lots of wonderful pieces of art there, unfortunately none of them related back to my work. We weren't given lots of time in London due to unforeseen traffic. My favourite piece is the geometric piece by Fernand Leger. I like this piece because it is very simplistic but also catches the audiences attention by using colourful geometric shapes to contrast the figures black outlines.Although I found and saw amazing and new art pieces I don't believe it helped my work in anyway as none of it was to do with my chosen theme or Illustration.

Tom Whalen film poster research

Image
Tom Whalen is a graphic designer making Disney/marvel posters, his style was based on old comic book art that he used to read when he was younger. I really like Tom Whalen's work, it is very vibrant catching the attention of the audience, he also adds a lot of detail in his art work which helps show what the film is about without giving away the whole story line. In a lot of his work he uses negative space to his advantage, this has inspired me to try and use negative space in my book cover designs.

Film and Book cover research

Book Covers When looking at "Disney book covers", I wanted to find a variety of techniques including digitally as well as hand drawn covers. I really like the , Jungle Book , cover as it overlays multiple leaves in a variety of bright colours, this is eye catching but also leads your eye to the title as it contrasts the background. The Mary Poppins , hand drawn style cover is very interesting as i like the natural art texture it gives off, I also like the use of colour as it isn't too bright but still catches your eye and makes it look like a family friendly book. Alice in Wonderland includes mainly typography in the style of the rabbit hole, this gives the audience  tripped out feeling, it makes you think your looking into the rabbit hole itself. As Old as Time , is digitally made and uses a lot of dark colours such as black and red, this contrasts against the bright blue text and the rose at the bottom of the cover.   Film Posters  When...

Digitally coloured and textured pieces

Ariel Normal Version Snow White Normal version Snow White gruesome version Ursula  After drawing my sketches I scanned/photographed my image into my Surface Pro 4, then I used Photoshop to add colour and textures. For "Snow White gruesome version" I wanted to make her clothes more minimal and dark, I also tried to make her cheek bones, eyelids and nose more defined and dark, to show decay. For the villain Ursula I wanted to make her skinnier than her original character in the Disney film as I wanted her body to be a bit more scary and sharp. For her tentacles I made them skinny and curly near the end to look more creepy and sinister. As for the shell I wanted to give the effect of a bright light/fog coming out of it, i did this by adding lots of filters to the green paint, i used: -brush strokes -blur motion (90 degrees horizontally) I also added a low opacity brush of green over one side of her face, tentacle and arm to make it look more realistic.

Tim Burton Trial drawings

Image
These are some of my drawings that were inspired by Tim Burton and his films. I kept the eyes really big but I tried changing the shape of the eyes to find what I prefer and think works. I kept lots of the characters skinny and kind of fragile. I plan on adding colour either digitally or using watercolour, my favourite piece is my Snow White as she looks pretty yet fragile like Tim Burton's work. I tried to change each characters facial features to see which I find the most effective as well as making the characters individual and unique.

My first rough Disney drawings

These are my Rough Drawing of Disney Characters, I wanted to try and choose 3 characters who have different facial features to get more practise in drawing characters. If I could change anything I would try and add shading instead of leaving it as outlines.

Tim Burton Research

Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland  Tim Burton is a well known director and producer. In a lot of his films he will do little sketches of how he thinks the characters should look. Lots of the film artists and animators take lots of inspiration from his work. Nightmare before Christmas  lots of the films he directs or produces are very dark and have minimal colour, this is because his films are more mysterious or horrid.  For Example, "Sweeny Todd", is about a barber (Sweeny Todd) who kills people to get revenge and then Mrs Lovette a pie maker puts them into pies and sell them. In the film their are a lot of outrageous costumes, amazing music that show how the characters feel. There is a lot of dark/faded colour and a lot of blood/guts, characters features are make to look deathly, by giving them harsh cheekbones and hollow eyelids. His work is really inspiring to me as i want to make my Illustrations quite gruesome and horrid to relate to the horrible sto...

Disney Movie Timeline

Image
When researching Disney movies I found films Disney Pixar films as well as films the Disney company as brought such as Star Wars, Marvel e.c.t In the time line down below I have only included original Disney Movies (not including Disney Pixar). The time line shows how popular Disney films are they have been producing a lot more films since 1950.

Original stories Dinsey used to base their movies off

Lots of Disney films are based off Original books that are changed to be more compatible with their child audience. The original stories are quite gruesome and horrid, I want to make a Illustrated piece to show people that not all stories begin happy. Snow White: Evil Queen eats the lungs and liver , believing them to be Snow White's The Prince finds Snow White in her glass coffin and takes her to his castle, when one of the carriers trips , causing the poised apple to get dislodged awakening Snow White. The Prince and Snow White get married and force the Evil Queen to wear burning hot iron shoes and dance until she drops dead. Rapunzel: The Prince visits Rapunzel that often she becomes pregnant with twins. The witch sees Rapunzel's baby bump, she cuts off her hair and banishes her to the wilderness , the witch lures the Prince into the tower using Rapunzel's hair. When the prince sees the witch and hears how he will never see Rapunzel again he jumps out the wi...
